FAQ

Safety, preparation and what to expect

What is a darkness retreat?

A supported experience in complete darkness, designed to reduce external sensory input and support deep rest and inner awareness. You stay in a darkened space for an extended period while receiving structured support, nourishment and daily check-ins. More about dark retreats and where they come from.

What happens during the retreat?

You spend most of your time resting, sleeping, meditating and observing your inner experience without visual stimulation. You have private accommodation, prepared meals delivered to your cabin, and a regular facilitator check-in.

Is a darkness retreat safe?

Darkness retreats are safe when they are thoughtfully designed, properly screened and supported by experienced facilitators. We screen before accepting anyone and provide daily check-ins, a clear orientation, and integration support. They are not recommended for people with certain mental health conditions, and safety always comes before intensity or duration.

How long is the retreat?

Four nights on site, with about 72 hours in complete darkness. For certain individuals we may offer a different length, depending on readiness, intention and prior experience.

Do I need meditation or retreat experience?

No. You should feel comfortable spending time alone and reflecting on your own experience.

Will I be alone the entire time?

You are in solitude in your own cabin, and you are not unsupported. Your facilitator checks in every day and support is available if you need it.

Are any substances or plant medicines involved?

No. Nothing is taken or offered as part of the retreat. This is not advice about any medication you are prescribed; talk with your healthcare provider about that.

How do I prepare?

Reduce stimulation and media in the days before, adjust your diet, and set a clear intention. After acceptance you receive detailed preparation guidelines, and you have a one-hour call with your facilitator about two weeks before.

Is this therapy or medical treatment?

No. Darkness retreats are not medical or psychological treatment and do not replace therapy or healthcare. They are experiential retreats for rest, self-exploration and inner inquiry. If you have concerns, consult your healthcare provider.

What happens afterwards?

Integration matters. We offer support after the retreat to help you make sense of your experience and return to daily life with care.
